A Custom Humidor — A Retirement Build Worth Celebrating

Sometimes a commission comes in that you just know is going to be a special one. This was one of those. A customer reached out looking to give a meaningful retirement gift to their attorney — someone who had been so much more than just contracted counsel over the years. They wanted something that reflected the gravity of that relationship. Something that would last. We got to work.

The design centered around Wenge and curly Hard Maple — two species that honestly don't get paired together nearly enough. The Wenge is dark, rich, and serious, with that tight linear grain that just drinks up a finish. The curly Maple below it adds this warm, almost luminous band that keeps the whole piece from feeling too heavy. Together they've got this kind of quiet confidence that felt right for the occasion.

Crack the lid open and the inside is all Spanish Cedar — walls, floor, lid panel, everything. The removable tray sits on a slatted cedar floor, split into two sections with plenty of room for a solid collection underneath. This isn't a decorative box with a cedar sticker inside — it's built the way a humidor should be built. Your sticks will thank you.

For hardware we went with Brusso hinges — no compromises there. If you've ever used Brusso you know, and if you haven't, you should. They operate like they're on bearings and they'll outlast everything else on the build. Paired with the Spanish Cedar lining, this box is going to hold humidity like a champ for decades.

The personalization on the front panel was CNC-engraved and hand-filled with gold — a detail that turned out better than we could have hoped. Against the dark Wenge it really pops. The lid got several coats of marine spar varnish, bringing out that deep, almost glassy look on the center panel with the hard maple banding framing it perfectly.

This one went out the door feeling like something that'll be sitting on a desk or in a study for the next 30 years. That's the goal, isn't it? That's what keeps us in the shop.
